Personality
Arthur is essentially reserved. He isn't exactly shy, but he tends to stay within his own little bubble. He doesn't make friends very easily, and if you do happen to get to the point where he considers you one, he may still seem distant to you. He likes his privacy, which leads to him going off to a place to be alone quite a lot.
background story
Arthur was born and raised most of his life in the city of London. His early years were relatively simple, living with a caring, sometimes doting mother by the name of Catherine, and a hard-working, somewhat strict, father by the name of James.
Towards the years leading up to the war, Arthur began to see a drastic change in his dad. His father, was beginning to show signs of alcoholism... While Arthur was usually gone during the daylight hours for school, at night, he would tend to experience his dad drunk... His reversed-personality when under the influence of alcohol eventually scared Arthur into hiding inside the sanctuary of his bedroom every evening. To keep himself busy, he would find himself either concentrating on schoolwork, or burying his head inside a book, tending to get lost there.
Through all of this, as his relationship with his father worsened, his relationship with his mother grew. Arthur enjoyed baking with Catherine, and even though his food always came out blackened, she would always eat it with a smile on her face, and insist it was delicious. It wasn't much longer that Arthur noticed the bruises and cuts on his mother, even if she tried to hide them. This became the downfall of any lingering relationship he may have had with his Dad. Instead, Arthur began to hate the man with a passion.
One night, the boy couldn't take it anymore. At the age of 11, Arthur decided to stand up to his Dad, during one of his alcoholic rages towards his mother. Catherine, having been knocked unconscious, never got to see Arthur being dragged by the head of his hair to his bedroom, where he was sexually abused, being the only place that would muffle the boy's screams enough.
After the incident, Arthur stayed in the solitude of his room more than ever. Even if he hated just the sight of the place, it was the only time he could spend alone, so there he stayed, and there he read. This was the time when his relationship with his mother started to decline, for not even Catherine could get her son to come out of his room.
Once the war started, James went off to fight in the war, and slowly, the boy started to socialize more with his mother, and the world around him. He never once showed a sign of missing his Dad. In fact, they could be considered the best years of his life, even despite the bombings that would send him and his mom into their basement, or the nearest bomb shelter.
About a month or so before the war ended, Arthur's mom received a letter stating his father James, had died in the war. During the days leading up to the end of the dreadful war, she became cold, and distant. One morning, Arthur came home from school to find his mother dead. She had committed suicide. A year after that, Arthur was sent to a boarding school in the still-reconstructing country of France.
Extras: While he's fine around a group of people, Arthur sometimes is uncomfortable being around crowds.

The day at school was boring. It was the same old stuff... Mathematics, lunch, get picked on, air raid... Arthur was honestly starting to wonder when the war would ever end. He had heard rumors from other students that it would go on forever. That was just a rumor, and Arthur didn't think it to be true. It had to end sometime, because otherwise they'd run out of people to send to fight, and he didn't think they'd use the children. Some of the others talked about their mums, and how friendly they were bein' with the American soldiers over in England. Others talked about how they got chocolate. Arthur couldn't even remember the last time he got chocolate... He only wished his mom was friendly to the soldiers here, maybe then he could get even a piece. Instead, he was stuck with the food they got on rations. Not to say that his mum was a bad cook, Arthur just wished that for once he could eat a big meal like he used to, back when he was little; back when he was still a kid, in the 11 year old's books.
Glancing around quickly as he entered the front door, Arthur hurried off and scampered up to his room. It didn't look like his father was home yet, but he didn't want to take any chances. He missed seeing mum after school, but he would rather read one of his books, than risk a meet-up with him after he had been out at the Pub. It was for the best.
