Personality
Elise generally is a cheerful and kind girl who doesn’t stand out a lot. Though what she went through in the war affects her behaviour at times. She has a deep hate for Germans, since they ruined most of her childhood. She is under the impression that all Germans are Nazis and doesn’t realize that there were also people in Germany who had it tough during the war. She is proud of her Jewish lineage and doesn’t see it as a weakness or something to be pitied for. According to her, it proves she is strong, that she came through the war mostly unharmed while being a Jew.
Despite her kind nature, she also has a mischievous streak and tends to rebel against the authorities. She practically has done nothing else in her life, after all. Rules weren’t meant to be followed for this girl, leading her into trouble from time to time.
She dislikes being outside for to long, since it makes her feel unsafe. She has spend a lot of time inside, hiding from the Nazis, and can’t shake that feeling off, even now.
Background story
Elise’s story starts before the war, when she wasn’t even born yet. Her mother was a Belgian, Jewish woman. She wasn’t married, which was unusual for a woman her age and looks. It was considered as a disgrace by her family. Woman were supposed to get married, bear children and take care of said children. Though Elise’s mother didn’t want any of that. You could say she was somewhat of a feminist, and that was generally frowned upon. To escape an arranged marriage that her family took care of, she ran away from her home country and settled in the Netherlands, taking every job she could get to survive. She had a short affair with a man, which turned out to be Johan’s father. Though she didn’t know at the time that he already had a wife and son. She was shocked when she found out, but couldn’t bring herself to leave him.
Then she received a message that her father was dying, so she had to return to her family in Belgium. They kept urging her to get married, but she ran away again and settled elsewhere in Belgium. Later she found out that she was pregnant and a couple months later she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, Elise. Now having a child to care for, life became a little more complicated. She refused to get married still, but somehow she managed to earn enough money to give her child a relatively comfortable life.
Elise grew up, enjoying hearing stories about her father. They met at a bar, it was love at first sight. He was a wonderful man and they were very happy together. Though there was this evil woman, who wanted to drive them apart. In the end she got her way. These were the kind of stories her mother told her before bedtime. And even though she never met him, Elise loved her father.
She was 10 years old when the war started. Even though Belgium intended to stay neutral, the Germans invaded anyway. Yellow stars were sewn onto her clothes. When she asked why, she didn’t get an answer. When the other kids started to bully her about the star, Elise threw a fit and refused to wear the clothes. In public. Though a slap from her mother soon ended her whining. She had never hit her before, so it could only mean this was serious ‘grown up’ business. Following her mother’s example, she started to hit whoever bullied her about the star. So the kids soon learned they had to leave her alone about it.
Other Jews in the neighbourhood were being dragged out of their homes by the Nazis. Everything turned chaotic really fast, and Elise and her mother were forced to go into hiding. They lived with several families who protected them from the Germans, not staying in the same place for very long. Her mother seemed to know exactly where they were going, and when Elise finally got the courage to ask where that was, her mother answered “We’re going to your father.” Elise’s fear for the Nazis and the war was a bit pushed away at the idea of finally being able to meet her father. Being the wonderful man she had always imagined him to be, he would surely protect them.
Though she was disappointed, so say the least. When they arrived on her father’s farm, her mother claimed to the guy that she was his daughter, Elise nodding happily. Though her mother was rewarded with a hard slap and called a liar. Though they were allowed to stay. This was not how Elise had imagined her father to be. That man had just crushed the dreams and hopes of a 10 year old child, and she felt more miserable about the war then ever.
And while Elise disliked her father to the point of being scared of him, she did like her older brother, Johan. She followed him around as much as she could, often calling him ‘big brother’ instead of his actual name. When Johan got a summoning from the Nazis and had to go into hiding himself, Elise clung to him and begged him not to go and leave her here. Though he didn’t really have a choice. Elise was to young to understand that and still holds a grudge against him for this.
Because Johan disobeyed the Nazis, they would come looking for him soon. This meant Elise and her mother would also have to leave the farm. Just like Johan had done, they left for France, hoping it would be safer there. Their journey was a hectic one, staying out of the hands of the Germans while travelling wasn’t a very easy thing to do. Sometimes they stayed hidden in someone else’s house for a month before they could travel further. They were travelling with some other refugees, nearing the Belgian-French border, when they were stopped by German soldiers, asking for their papers. What followed was pure, uncontrolled chaos. Everybody tried to get away at once and Elise was separated from her mother. She hid in alleyway, curling up into a ball and waiting until everything was silent again. When she came out of hiding, everyone was gone. The German soldiers, but also the other refugees and most importantly, her mother was gone.
Elise, nearing her 12th birthday at this point, didn’t know what to do. Her mother had told her they were going to get on a truck that would take them to France. Knowing it was risky, she had given Elise directions on how to get to the truck and enough money to buy her freedom. So Elise followed those directions, gave the truck driver the money and got in. Curled up in a corner, she cried nonstop until they reached their destination.
She ended up in a French orphanage. The only ones who could afford to adopt a child in these times, were the rich. Being ‘damaged’ from her experiences in the war and having developed a bit of a difficult personality to handle, nobody wanted her. Shortly after the war had ended, somebody took pity in her and took her in. Elise was sixteen at this point. She was required to call them ‘mother’ and ‘father’, but would avoid to do so whenever possible. And she flat out refused to take on their last name. They were not her parents.
Her new parents thought she needed to get an education and some discipline, so they send her to a boarding school called Fond De L’Etang.
Extras
Elise kept her mother’s last name, since she was the one who raised her.

Elise unwillingly made her way to the schoolyard. She didn’t like being outside all that much. True, the fresh air was a nice change from the classrooms, but something didn’t feel quite… safe.
It was time for gymnastics. She hadn’t had that class yet. Officially she already had to take it once, but she had hidden in the girls bathrooms and refused to come out. A teacher had tried to talk her into going to the class, threatening with punishments, but Elise refused. The gymnastics teacher himself hadn’t even shown up. Apparently he didn’t care enough about the students to make sure they attended his class.
Though Elise wasn’t looking forward to more punishment, so she went to attend the class like a good girl. The teacher stepped in front of the group of students to tell them what they had to do. And as soon as Elise laid eyes on the tall man, her mouth fell open in shock. No matter how many years had past, she would recognize that man anywhere.
Elise pushed her way past some students and launched herself at the teacher, capturing him in a hug. For a moment, she forgot all about the grudge she held against him for leaving her. She was just glad to see a familiar face after all this time.
“Big brother.” She mumbled against him.
(( This is set when Elise was still new to the school, assuming Johan was already a teacher there then. ))
