IC
Personality
He's nothing less than what you would call a 'free-spirit'. His parents used to tell him he was like sunshine and made everyone happy. He will ALWAYS believe this. He's happy, flamboyant, obnoxious, and wants to be like a brother to everyone. He's one of those 'live in the moment' people. Yong Soo is smart and very bright. . .but he's also oblivious and flat out stupidsometimes mostly.
Although his past is dreary, Yong Soo doesn't like to acknowledge it so he'll always make up ridiculous stories instead. Never the same story twice either. He's also strangely patriotic now that his country is it's own country again and believes it's the best country because it so opressed and came out okay (but he doesn't know the Korean war is coming)!
Background Story
Yong Soo wasn't exactly a priviledged child, but he at least at a happy childhood. . .for the first 6 years at least.
He had a mother (Im Gae Hwa), father (Im Jin Hoo), and a little brother (Im Min Ho) just 3 years younger than him. They didn't have much, no one really did, but they got by. When Yong Soo was 6, in 1937, after the Japanese invaded China the war started and his father was conscripted into the Japanese Imperial Army. With only the three of them left, they tried to run. . .but there was no where to run to. Russia to the North, China to the West, more Japanese to the East and nothing but water in the South. All they could do was hide, which worked for 2 years. They were staying with some relatives in one of the southern most cities, waiting for a boat out of the country, when they took Yong Soo's mother. The three of them were walking back from a farmers marker, a Japanese Patrol spotted her and took her away. Yong Soo and his brother didn't understand, but they listened to their mothers last words and went back to their Aunt and Uncles.
Living with the relatives wasn't easy. . .they had 2 children of their own and feeding 6 mouths wasn't easy in those times. They got fed less and for Yong Soo's little 5 year old brother, the malnutrition was taking it's toll. But Yong Soo always held his head up, stayed strong and smiled big for his brother. Min Ho grew sicker and weaker until one day. . .he just didn't wake up. The loss of his brother was devistating to Yong Soo, the only thing that changed was that he got more food which made him feel guilty, so every meal he would take a small portion of the dinner and leave it at his brothers grave.
A few weeks after Min Ho's death, they finally were able to get on the boat. His aunt and uncle had lost a child of their own in an air raid and started treating Yong Soo as their own. . .although they always called him by their dead sons name. . .so they forced their 'son' to come with them. They landed on the west coast of Canada and travelled across, looking for a place to settle. They moved across the country and settled on the East Coast, working as fisherman. While living in Canada, he became proficient in English but only in speaking. He learned the Alphabet from neighbours and how to read. . .mosly street signs though (. . .which in East Coast Canada there is pretty expansive array of street signs ie CAUTION: SNAPPING TURTLE. DO NOT SWIM.). If asked to write or read something in English that he isn¡¯t sure of, he'll decline and come up with a million excuses not too ie "THIS PEN IS CAUSING FRICTION AGAINST MY DELICATE SKIN. I COULD COMBUST. I DON'T WANT THAT DO YOU WANT THAT? I DIDN'T THINK SO. SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTED KOREANS STAIN EVERYTHING. VERY HARD TO GET OUT. WE GO DOWN FIGHTING. AJA D:<!"
In 1946, Yong Soo ran away. His life wasn't particularily hard, but he wasn't happy. He had his reasons. He stole their money and left on the first boat away. He wasn't sure where he was going, but he hoped he' be able to find a new life. His boat landed in France and he realized. . .it was hard to live alone at 16. He looked for a school that gave him food, room, and board. . .and hopefully a happy new start.
((Sorry I wrote so much : D I like to write xD))
Extras
- When feeling an extreme emotion (ie anger or excitement) Yong Soo gets scatterbrained and slips between languages.
- Often uses Korea suffixes to convey respect instead of 'ms', 'mr', 'sir' etc. . . because he thinks the english ones are just silly sounding.
- He never clears his plate, he always leaves a little bit.
- Keeps his brothers small toy stuffed turtle near/on him all the times (It's dirty and grey by this point).
- Knows basic martial arts, he spent time when he was younger watching teachers at their local dojo and also receiving a year of easystuff from his dad (OC: But between you and me most Koreans seem to have a natural ability to perform a roundhouse kick)
RP sample
Yong Soo woke with a start, his forehead beaded with a light sweat. He let out a deep breath and looked out the window. It was a sunny morning. . .it looked like a good day ahead. He rolled out of bed, leaving his sheets in piles, and went into the washroom. He stared at himself in the mirror for a minute. He ran the water and cupped the water in his hands, splashing it on his face. He dried it off and looed in the mirror again, this time with a renewed confidence, "Aja !" He fist pumped in the mirror then skid out of the bathroom humming.
He didn"t feel much like paying attention that morning, so he simply practiced writing out his ABC's on spare leaflet of paper. Why wasn't English as easy as Korean? One day the world would recognize the superior wiriting system. Someone leaned over, "Yong Soo. . .I missed that can I borrow your notes?"
He looked up and blinked, "What?"
"You've been writing, can I see your notes for a minute please?"
He looked at the leaflet covered with AAAAAAAA BBBBBBBB CCCCCCCC and grabbed a new piece of paper scribbling the one thing he new how to write better than anything else. . .except his name: "KOREA" in big, sloppy handwriting and handed the paper to the boy. The boy looked at it, "You. . .just wrote 'Korea'. . ."
Yong Soo looked at the boy with a serious expression, "Korea invented education, da-ze. You waste my countrys great gift by not paying attention D:<"
