He tries to stick to the rules so that he doesn't get into trouble.
background story
Kiku was raised in Japan. He lived there practically his whole life. He was raised in a stable environment with a loving mother and a busy father.
His father was business man and would spend most of his time working leaving the mother to raise Kiku.
Kiku didn't mind it too much because he knew his father had a lot going on but still, he wished that he could spend more time with him.
As the years went by Kiku went to school and tried to do his best to get his father's approval. But even with straight A's his father could only say: "That's my son."
Kiku began to feel a bit lonely even though his mom praised him.. but she always did. He started to feel left out and his grades started to decrease. Kiku hoped that way his father would notice him. And he did.
One day his father suddenly came home much earlier than he should've and he walked up to Kiku and somehow he knew what was going on. He smiled and patted Kiku's head. He promised his son that he would take the family through a field trip on Japan if Kiku could get his grades back up.
Kiku was ecstatic and soon his grades had gone up again. But suddenly the war had broken out in Japan too. 3 years after it had started. Air raids had started to become a normality and they tried to escape from it.
One day in 1945 everything changed. Kiku and his family were resting in Okinawa when allied forces invaded the place. It was a bloody battle and through all the commotion Kiku lost sight of his family. As the bombs fell and the bullets were flying Kiku was desperatly trying to find them. He arrived in a big open area where the action had already ended.
Dead bodies were laying everywhere. He was afraid because somehow he knew what he was going to find.. and after searching for a while he found his parents.. holding hands.. dead. The sight left Kiku scarred but as a proud Japanese man he knew he had to look forward. That was what his dad would've wanted anyway.
Shortly after saying his parents goodbye he was captured by allied forces. They noticed that this kid was all alone and he was barely struggling. One of them could speak japanese and he asked were his parents were and Kiku started crying. They understood the message and felt sorry for the little boy.
Then the man who spoke japanese decided to take Kiku with him to America. Kiku wasn't looking forward to that but he had little choice anyway. Only a week after losing his parents he was sitting in a plane with his new ''dad''. He told him that they were going to have a check-up in France before heading to America.
As they arrived in France the soldier reported what had happened and who the child was. But his superiors weren't that thrilled with the idea of bringing a Japanese boy into the U.S. They told him he should just send the boy away.
The man was disappointed but understood that he had little choice. But he couldn't just throw him away.. he didn't know much of France so he gave the boy to an elderly woman and told her that she should take this boy to an orphanage. And in a few days Japan had been send to a boarding school.

As Kiku and his family were running from the war they were suprised at the kindness of the people that lived in the area. They gave refuge to the family and even though they were fleeing Kiku felt as if he had never been closer to his family. And that always cheered him up.
Kiku and his dad spended more time together then they used to do and he even showed Kiku how to tip a cow over. His mother laughing at the sight as the two kept tipping the farmer's cows over. It loosened the stress and made everyone more relaxt.
Afterwards Kiku went to his guestroom that he had received from the farmer. He needed some time alone. He knew that all this fun would end after tomorrow.. they'd continue their journey away from the war.
But he couldn't imagine that there was a safe place.. if he could he would ask his parents if they could stay here but that would be asking too much. After a while he decided that he would ask anyway. He could at least make the suggestion he figured.
He got called for diner. And as he kneeled at the table he thought of the best time to say it. But just before his mouth could open the farmer had asked if they could stay. Kiku's eyes went open and he looked at his parents but both of them smiled at the farmer and kindly refused. Kiku did not understand.
Later that night before going to sleep he asked his parents why they refused. They told him the farmer barely had enough to live on himself and it wouldn't have been fair to ask for his food.
Kiku thought about this afterwards and he seemed to understand it. After a while he fell asleep.
The next morning they were ready to depart and after thanking the man again they left.
